Often, yes, but it depends on the size, number and position of the fibroids or the extent of endometriosis, and on any earlier surgery. Laparoscopy and hysteroscopy use small incisions or none, which usually means a faster recovery than open surgery, although some cases still need an open operation. Send your scan images and reports so a partner gynaecologist can say which approach is realistic and whether non-surgical treatment should come first.

Send recent pelvic ultrasound or MRI images and reports, your latest cervical screening result, relevant blood tests such as a full blood count, and letters from your own gynaecologist. Add your symptoms, cycle pattern, pregnancies, previous operations and medicines, and say whether you hope to have children in future, as this can change the operation offered. If cancer is suspected or diagnosed, include pathology reports and keep your own team closely involved.

Hysteroscopy is often a day procedure, while laparoscopy usually means one or a few nights in hospital, depending on the operation. Your surgeon decides when it is safe to fly, often after a wound check and once you are walking comfortably. The gas used during laparoscopy can cause shoulder pain for a few days. Walk regularly, drink plenty of water and ask about clot prevention for long flights.

It may suit adults with physical discomfort, for example irritation during exercise, intercourse or in tight clothing, who have a clear and realistic aim. A surgeon should check your general health and discuss why you want the procedure, and may advise against it when the concern is normal anatomical variation. Ask for the surgeon’s name and specialist training, and expect to avoid intercourse, swimming and tight clothing for several weeks, as advised.

Ask the partner hospital for a discharge letter, the operation report and any pathology results, which may only be ready after you have left. Share them with your gynaecologist or family doctor, who can check wounds and follow up the results. Seek prompt local care for heavy bleeding, a fever, increasing abdominal pain or a painful, swollen leg. Keep a copy of your written plan, which should name the surgeon and the hospital.
