Quick answer

What is IVF?

IVF (in vitro fertilisation) is a fertility treatment in which eggs are collected from the ovaries after hormone stimulation, fertilised with sperm in a laboratory, often by ICSI, and grown into embryos that are transferred to the uterus. In Turkey, IVF is legally available only to married couples using their own eggs and sperm.

IVF Treatment in Istanbul: overview

IVF helps couples conceive when pregnancy has not happened naturally, whether because of blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, low egg reserve, male-factor infertility, ovulation problems or unexplained infertility. In Turkey, treatment takes place at licensed IVF centres regulated by the Ministry of Health, and Med World Türkiye coordinates care with partner fertility clinics in Istanbul. Before you travel, a reproductive specialist reviews your AMH, FSH, ultrasound and semen analysis results and any previous cycles, then proposes a stimulation protocol and gives an honest view of your chances.

It is important to understand Turkish law before planning. IVF in Turkey is permitted only for married couples using their own eggs and sperm, and you must present a marriage certificate. Egg donation, sperm donation, embryo donation and surrogacy are prohibited, and sex selection for non-medical reasons is not allowed. If you need donor eggs or sperm, we will tell you honestly and suggest you seek advice in a country where this is legal. For eligible couples, ICSI, blastocyst culture, PGT-A and embryo freezing are widely available.

Which IVF Treatment techniques are available?

IVF and ICSI fertilisation

In conventional IVF, eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish; in ICSI, an embryologist injects a single sperm into each mature egg. ICSI is used for male-factor infertility, previous fertilisation failure or frozen sperm, and many clinics use it routinely.

Blastocyst culture and time-lapse monitoring

Embryos are grown to day 5, the blastocyst stage, so the most developed can be selected, while time-lapse incubators photograph growth without disturbing the culture. It suits couples with several embryos who want to transfer one well-developed embryo at a time.

PGT-A testing and frozen embryo transfer

PGT-A screens a few cells from each blastocyst for chromosomal abnormalities and may be considered for women over about 35, recurrent miscarriage or repeated implantation failure. Embryos are frozen by vitrification and transferred later in a hormonally prepared cycle.

Micro-TESE sperm retrieval

For men with no sperm in the ejaculate (azoospermia), a urologist uses an operating microscope to find sperm-producing tubules in the testicles. Any sperm retrieved can be used fresh or frozen for ICSI.

Why choose Med World Türkiye for IVF Treatment?

  • Advanced laboratory techniques

Partner clinics offer ICSI, day-5 blastocyst culture, time-lapse embryo monitoring and assisted hatching, selected according to your diagnosis.

  • Start stimulation at home

Ovarian stimulation and early scans can often begin with a local doctor, reducing your time away from work and family.

  • Itemised written quote

Treatment in Turkey often costs less than private treatment in the UK, mainly because of lower operating costs. The written quote lists the cycle, medication and any extras such as PGT-A separately.

  • Transparent legal guidance

We explain Turkish eligibility rules before you book, so you never travel for a programme you cannot legally access.

Who is a good candidate for IVF Treatment?

  • Married couples who have not conceived after 12 months of trying, or after 6 months if the woman is over 35.
  • Women with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, endometriosis or ovulation disorders such as PCOS.
  • Couples with male-factor infertility, including low sperm count, poor motility or azoospermia.
  • Couples with unexplained infertility or previous unsuccessful IUI or IVF cycles.
  • Married couples who wish to freeze embryos for later use, or to consider PGT-A because of age or recurrent miscarriage.

What does a IVF Treatment trip to Istanbul look like?

  1. 1

    Day 1 – Arrival & fertility assessment

After an airport transfer, you meet the reproductive specialist for ultrasound, blood tests and semen analysis, and your marriage certificate and passports are checked. If you started stimulation at home, your doses are reviewed.

  2. 2

    Days 2–10 – Stimulation & monitoring

Daily hormone injections continue for about 10–12 days in total, with ultrasound scans every 2–3 days to track follicle growth, followed by a trigger injection.

  3. 3

Retrieval day – Egg collection & fertilisation

Eggs are collected in a 15–20 minute procedure under short sedation, and your husband's sperm sample is used the same day for IVF or ICSI. You rest for a few hours, then return to the hotel.

  4. 4

Day 5 after retrieval – Embryo transfer

A blastocyst is placed in the uterus in a short procedure that usually needs no anaesthesia, or embryos are frozen for a later transfer. A beta-hCG pregnancy blood test follows 10–12 days later and can be done at home.

What is recovery like after IVF Treatment?

Physical recovery after IVF is quick, although the emotional wait can be demanding. After egg retrieval you may have cramping, bloating and light spotting for 1–2 days, and most women return to normal activity within that time. In the first week after embryo transfer, light activity is fine, but avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and hot baths. Seek medical help for severe bloating, abdominal pain or breathlessness, which can signal ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). The beta-hCG test is taken 10–12 days after transfer. If you are pregnant, the first ultrasound is usually at about 6–7 weeks, and care continues with your own obstetrician, typically from around 10–12 weeks.

How much does IVF Treatment cost in Turkey?

The price of IVF in Turkey depends on your stimulation protocol and medication dosage, whether ICSI and time-lapse culture are used, how many embryos are tested with PGT-A or frozen, and whether micro-TESE sperm retrieval is needed. Monitoring scans, blood tests and a fresh or frozen transfer also affect the total. With Med World Türkiye, a partner reproductive specialist first reviews your AMH, ultrasound and semen analysis results and any previous cycles; you then receive a written, itemised quote from the partner hospital or fertility clinic before you book anything.

What your written quote itemises

  • Fertility specialist consultations
  • Monitoring scans and blood tests
  • Stimulation medication
  • Egg retrieval under sedation and embryo transfer
  • ICSI and blastocyst culture
  • Transfers if requested, interpreter and coordinator

Med World Türkiye does not publish a price list. Every price comes from a written, itemised quote issued by the partner hospital after a surgeon has reviewed your photos, scans or medical records.

IVF Treatment: frequently asked questions

How much does IVF cost in Turkey?

The cost of IVF in Turkey depends on your stimulation protocol and medication dosage, whether ICSI or time-lapse culture is used, and whether PGT-A genetic testing, embryo freezing or micro-TESE is needed. The initial consultation is free: a partner reproductive specialist reviews your test results and any previous cycles, and you then receive a written, itemised quote from the partner hospital or fertility clinic before you book, with medication and extras listed separately.

Is IVF in Istanbul safe?

IVF in Istanbul is generally safe at licensed centres regulated by the Turkish Ministry of Health, with egg retrieval performed under short sedation by experienced specialists. Risks include ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), bleeding or infection after retrieval, and multiple pregnancy if more than one embryo is transferred. Antagonist protocols, careful monitoring and single-embryo transfer help reduce these risks.

How long do I need to stay in Istanbul for IVF?

Most couples stay in Istanbul for about 10–14 days for a fresh IVF cycle. You can often start stimulation injections at home with local monitoring and arrive mid-cycle, which shortens the trip. A frozen embryo transfer needs only around 5–7 days. Your husband usually needs to be present for a few days around egg retrieval to provide a sample and sign the consent forms.

Is egg retrieval painful?

Egg retrieval is performed under short sedation, so you are asleep or deeply relaxed and do not feel the 15–20 minute procedure. Afterwards, mild cramping, bloating and spotting are common for a day or two and usually settle with simple painkillers. The hormone injections during stimulation cause only brief stinging. Most women return to normal activity within 1–2 days.

What are the success rates of IVF in Turkey?

IVF success depends mainly on the woman's age and egg reserve rather than the country. Live birth rates per transfer are highest under 35 and decline notably after 40, while sperm quality, embryo quality and the uterus also play a part. Med World Türkiye does not quote a single success rate; partner clinics share their age-banded statistics during consultation so you can judge your chances realistically.

Is there an age limit for IVF?

Age is the most important factor in IVF because, in Turkey, treatment must use your own eggs. Chances fall significantly from the late 30s, and beyond the mid-40s live birth rates with own eggs are low, so many specialists advise against further cycles at that point. Couples should seek assessment after 12 months of trying, or after 6 months if the woman is over 35.

Can we use donor eggs, donor sperm or surrogacy in Turkey?

Donor eggs, donor sperm, donor embryos and surrogacy cannot be used in Turkey because Turkish law prohibits them. IVF is permitted only for married couples using their own eggs and sperm, and a marriage certificate is required. Sex selection for non-medical reasons is also not allowed. If donor treatment is the most suitable option for you, we will tell you honestly and recommend seeking care in a country where it is legally regulated.
