It depends on your age, prescription, corneal thickness and shape, and the health of your eyes. Laser surgery is often considered for younger adults with a stable prescription, while lens replacement may suit people with high prescriptions, thin corneas, early cataract or age-related reading difficulty. Laser may be unsuitable with an unstable prescription, keratoconus, severe dry eye or during pregnancy. The ophthalmologist decides after examining your eyes in person.

Trifocal lenses aim to give clear distance, intermediate and near vision, and many people need glasses less often, but nobody can promise you will never need them. Some people notice halos or glare around lights at night, especially at first, while the brain adapts. They may not suit people with certain retinal, corneal or glaucoma problems. Ask the ophthalmologist why a particular lens is recommended for your eyes and what the alternatives are.

Send your current glasses or contact lens prescription, recent eye examination reports, details of eye conditions and earlier eye surgery, and your general health conditions and medicines. Contact lenses change the shape of the cornea, so you will usually be asked to stop wearing them for a period before the measurements; the partner eye centre tells you how long for your lens type. Final suitability is confirmed only after the examination in Istanbul.

Most people can fly once their first check-up shows the eye is healing well, and your ophthalmologist confirms the timing. Use the prescribed eye drops exactly as instructed, wear the eye shield at night if given one, and avoid rubbing your eyes, swimming, eye make-up and dusty places for as long as advised. Seek urgent local care for increasing pain, worsening vision, flashes of light or a shadow across your sight.

Arrange a check with an optometrist or ophthalmologist at home before you travel, and bring them the surgery report, lens type and power, and your eye-drop schedule. Glaucoma needs lifelong monitoring after any surgery. When choosing, ask for the ophthalmologist’s name, how often they perform your procedure, which laser or lens is proposed and why, and how complications are handled. Your written plan should name the surgeon and the eye centre.
