A second opinion can help when a diagnosis is rare or complex, when several treatment options exist, or when you want reassurance before a major decision. Tell your oncologist you are seeking one; it is a normal request. Ask them whether waiting for it is safe, because some cancers should not wait. A partner tumour board reviews your records and writes a report that you can discuss with your own team.

Send the pathology report and, if requested, the biopsy slides or tissue blocks, which your hospital laboratory can usually release. Add your scans as original image files, such as CT, MRI or PET-CT, not only the written reports, plus clinic letters, staging, blood results, genetic or molecular test results and a summary of treatment so far. Records in English or another widely used language speed up the review; ask your coordinator about translation.

It may be for certain small, well-defined tumours or metastases, but suitability depends on tumour type, size, location and earlier treatment. Gamma Knife treats targets in the brain, while CyberKnife can also treat sites such as the spine, lung, liver or prostate. Radiosurgery delivers highly focused radiation, often in one or a few sessions. A partner radiation oncologist reviews your images, and the recommendation should be agreed with your oncologist at home.

Coordination should be agreed before you travel. Your oncologist at home stays responsible for your overall care, so share the partner team’s proposal with them first and ask how it fits with surgery, chemotherapy or other therapy you receive. After treatment, bring home the full treatment summary, doses, imaging and recommended follow-up scans. Side effects can appear after you return, so know in advance which local team to contact.

Ask your own oncologist and the partner team whether travel is safe for you now. Cancer and some treatments raise the risk of blood clots and infection, and low blood counts, recent surgery or brain tumours can affect when you may fly. Travelling with a companion helps. Check that your travel insurance covers your condition, carry your medicines and a medical summary, and know where to seek urgent care during the trip.
