Quick answer

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is surgery that removes stubborn fat deposits through small incisions, using a thin tube called a cannula, to reshape areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs or arms. It is body contouring, not a weight-loss operation. Liposuction in Turkey usually takes 1–3 hours, often under general anaesthesia, with same-day discharge or one night in hospital and about 5–7 days in Istanbul.

Liposuction in Istanbul: overview

Liposuction removes stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise, reshaping areas such as the abdomen, flanks, back, thighs, arms or chin. It is a body-contouring operation, not a way to lose weight, and it suits people who are already close to a stable weight. For liposuction in Turkey, Med World Türkiye coordinates your treatment with independent, licensed partner plastic surgeons who operate in JCI-accredited partner hospitals in Istanbul. Before you travel, a partner surgeon reviews your photos, weight history and medical history and suggests which areas and which technique are likely to suit you.

Liposuction is real surgery, and recovery takes several weeks. Expect bruising, swelling and soreness, and plan to wear a compression garment day and night for several weeks. The final shape appears gradually over months, once swelling has settled. Risks include uneven contours or dents, asymmetry, numbness, fluid collections, infection, loose skin where fat was removed and, rarely, blood clots or fat embolism. Surgeons also limit how much fat they remove in one session, because larger volumes raise the risk of complications. We organise the surrounding logistics – airport transfers, a hotel near the hospital, an interpreter and remote aftercare follow-up – so you can focus on recovery.

Which Liposuction techniques are available?

Tumescent liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is the basis of most modern liposuction. The surgeon first injects a fluid containing a local anaesthetic and a medicine that narrows blood vessels, which reduces bleeding and bruising, then removes fat with a thin cannula through small incisions. It suits most areas and most people, and other techniques are usually added to it rather than replacing it.

Power-assisted and ultrasound-assisted liposuction

Power-assisted liposuction uses a vibrating cannula, and ultrasound-assisted liposuction (which many people search for by a device brand name) uses ultrasound energy to loosen fat before it is removed. They can help with firmer, fibrous areas such as the back, the male chest or repeat treatments. Energy devices carry a small risk of burns, and no technique tightens loose skin reliably.

Laser-assisted liposuction

Laser-assisted liposuction uses a laser fibre under the skin to heat and break up fat before suction. It is mainly used for small areas, such as the chin or arms. Some surgeons use it hoping for a mild tightening effect, but the evidence is limited, and the heat brings a risk of burns. Your surgeon explains whether it adds anything in your case.

360 liposuction of the midsection

360 lipo treats the abdomen, flanks and lower back in one operation to reshape the whole waist. Because it covers a large area, it takes longer and is limited by how much fat can be removed safely in one session, so some plans are staged. If the skin is loose or the stomach muscles are separated, a tummy tuck may suit you better than liposuction alone.

Not sure which option suits you?

Send your photos, scans or reports. A partner specialist reviews them and you receive a written plan and quote before you book anything.

Why choose Med World Türkiye for Liposuction?

  • Surgeon review before you travel

A partner plastic surgeon reviews your photos, weight history and medical history and suggests which areas can be treated safely in one session before you book anything.

  • JCI-accredited partner hospitals

Surgery takes place in JCI-accredited partner hospitals, with anaesthesia given by an anaesthetist and an overnight stay for monitoring when the surgeon advises it.

  • Itemised written quote

The written quote from the partner hospital lists the technique, the areas treated, the hospital stay and compression garments before you book, so you can see exactly what is and is not included.

  • One coordinated plan and aftercare

One coordinator arranges the consultation, surgery, hotel and transfers, and after you fly home passes your photos and questions to the partner surgeon for follow-up.

Who is a good candidate for Liposuction?

  • Adults with stubborn fat deposits in areas such as the abdomen, flanks, back, thighs, arms or chin that have not responded to diet and exercise.
  • People whose weight has been stable for some months and who are close to their goal weight, as liposuction is not a weight-loss operation.
  • People with reasonably firm, elastic skin, which shrinks back better after fat removal; loose skin may need a skin-tightening operation instead.
  • Non-smokers, or smokers able to stop before and after surgery for as long as the surgeon advises, with realistic expectations about the final shape.
  • Surgery is not a good idea if you hope to lose a lot of weight, have obesity that has not been addressed, have uncontrolled diabetes or heart disease, have a history of blood clots that has not been assessed, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Liposuction: is it right for me?

Questions people ask us in their own words, with straight answers.

I’m 41 and I’ve lost a lot of weight on weight-loss injections, but my lower belly and flanks won’t budge. Will liposuction fix it, or do I need a tummy tuck?

It depends mainly on your skin. Liposuction removes fat but does not tighten loose skin, and after a large weight loss the skin is often looser. If your lower belly hangs or your stomach muscles are separated, a tummy tuck may suit you better, sometimes with liposuction of the flanks. Surgeons also prefer your weight to have been stable for some months. Tell the surgeon about the injections, as some of these medicines may need pausing before anaesthesia. Send standing photos from the front and side with your weight history, and a partner surgeon can tell you which route is realistic.

I’m a hairdresser in Dublin and I’m on my feet all day. How much time off should I really plan after 360 lipo?

Probably more than the usual figure for desk work. Desk work is often possible after about 1–2 weeks, but 360 lipo treats the abdomen, flanks and lower back at once, so recovery usually takes longer, and standing all day in a compression garment while swollen is tiring. Strenuous activity usually waits until your surgeon agrees, often around 4–6 weeks. Many people with physical jobs plan a longer break or a gradual return, such as shorter days at first. Ask the partner surgeon, once they have reviewed your photos, how much time off they would suggest for your job.

I’m 36 and from Guadalajara. How do I make sure the person doing my lipo in Istanbul is a qualified plastic surgeon and not someone else?

Ask for it in writing. Before you book, ask for the name of the surgeon who will operate, their specialist qualification in plastic surgery and the hospital where surgery takes place, and check them. On arrival, the surgeon examines you and confirms the plan before you sign the consent form, and you can ask directly who will perform each part of the operation and who gives the anaesthetic. With Med World Türkiye, surgery is carried out by independent, licensed partner plastic surgeons in JCI-accredited partner hospitals. If a clinic will not name the surgeon or the hospital, treat that as a warning sign.

I’m 46, quite overweight and I have type 2 diabetes. Am I even a candidate for liposuction, or will the surgeon turn me down?

It depends on your overall health and how close you are to a stable weight. Liposuction is body contouring, not weight loss, and it suits people who are near their goal weight. Uncontrolled diabetes raises the risk of infection and slow healing, so surgeons usually advise getting it under control first; well-controlled diabetes does not always rule surgery out. A surgeon may suggest losing weight before treating stubborn areas. Send photos, your weight history, recent blood test results and your medication list, and a partner surgeon can tell you honestly whether surgery makes sense now or later.

Three weeks after lipo, back home in Leeds, I’ve got a hard swelling on one side. Is that normal, and who do I contact?

Some firmness and lumpiness are common for weeks, but a hard swelling on one side should be checked promptly, as it can be a fluid collection that may need draining. Send photos and a short description to your coordinator, who passes them to the partner surgeon for advice, and see a local doctor if you are told to or cannot wait. Fever, spreading redness, increasing pain, calf pain or breathlessness need urgent local medical care. Before you travel, it helps to know which local GP or clinic you would use and to ask what the written plan covers if follow-up treatment is needed.

I’m 44 and planning to travel alone to Istanbul for lipo. Is that realistic, or do I need someone with me afterwards?

Many people travel alone, but the first day or two are easier with some help. Liposuction usually means same-day discharge or one night in hospital, then several days of soreness, bruising and a tight compression garment that can be awkward to put on alone. Your coordinator arranges airport transfers, the hotel near the hospital, an interpreter and the check-ups, and stays in touch during your stay. If you have several areas treated or 360 lipo, or simply feel anxious, bringing a friend or partner is sensible. Tell your coordinator you are travelling alone, so the plan allows for it.

What does a Liposuction trip to Istanbul look like?

  1. 1

Before travel – Photos & surgeon review

You send photos of the areas you want treated, your weight history, medical history and a list of your medication. A partner plastic surgeon reviews them, and you receive a written plan and an itemised quote before you book anything.

  2. 2

    Day 1 – Arrival & consultation

After an airport transfer to your hotel, the surgeon examines you, confirms the areas and technique and explains what is realistic. Blood tests and an anaesthetic assessment follow, including a check of your blood-clot risk, before you sign the consent form.

  3. 3

    Day 2 – Surgery & recovery

Liposuction usually takes 1–3 hours, depending on the number of areas. The surgeon marks the areas before surgery. Afterwards you wear a compression garment, and you go back to the hotel the same day or stay one night in hospital, as your surgeon advises.

  4. 4

    Days 3–7 – Check-ups & flying home

You rest at the hotel, take regular short walks and attend check-ups, where the incisions and garment are checked. Long flights after surgery raise the risk of blood clots, so surgeons recommend compression stockings and moving around during the flight; your surgeon confirms when you are fit to fly.

What is recovery like after Liposuction?

Recovery after liposuction is gradual, and the final shape takes months to appear. In the first days, expect bruising, swelling, soreness and some fluid leaking from the small incisions; you wear a compression garment day and night and take regular short walks to reduce the risk of blood clots. Desk work is usually possible after about 1–2 weeks, depending on how many areas were treated. Keep wearing the compression garment for as long as your surgeon advises, often for several weeks. Light exercise can usually resume after a few weeks, and strenuous exercise once your surgeon agrees, often after around 4–6 weeks. Swelling goes down over the first weeks but can take up to 6 months to settle completely, and the treated skin may feel numb, lumpy or firm for a while. Massage or lymphatic drainage is sometimes recommended, but only as your surgeon advises. Contact the surgeon promptly about fever, spreading redness, increasing pain, a hard swelling on one side, calf pain or breathlessness.

Liposuction in Turkey: how much does it cost?

The price of liposuction in Turkey depends mainly on the number and size of the areas treated, the technique – tumescent, power-assisted, ultrasound-assisted or laser-assisted – and whether it is combined with fat transfer or a tummy tuck. The partner surgeon, the partner hospital, a night in hospital, hotel nights and compression garments also affect the total. Treatment in Turkey often costs less than private treatment in countries such as the US, Canada, the UK and much of Western Europe, mainly because of lower operating costs, but price should never be the only reason to choose a surgeon. With Med World Türkiye, a partner plastic surgeon first reviews your photos and medical history; you then receive a written, itemised quote from the partner hospital before you book anything.

What your written quote itemises

  • Surgeon and anaesthesia fees
  • Operating theatre and any hospital night
  • Pre-operative blood tests and anaesthetic assessment
  • Compression garment, dressings and medication
  • Hotel accommodation and airport transfers, if requested
  • Interpreter and remote aftercare follow-up

Med World Türkiye does not publish a price list. Every price comes from a written, itemised quote issued by the partner hospital after a surgeon has reviewed your photos, scans or medical records.

Liposuction: frequently asked questions

How much does liposuction cost in Turkey?

The cost of liposuction in Turkey depends on how many areas are treated and how large they are, the technique, any combined fat transfer or tummy tuck, the partner surgeon and hospital, and nights in hospital and in the hotel. The surgeon review is free: you send photos and your medical history, a partner plastic surgeon reviews them, and you then receive a written, itemised quote from the partner hospital before you book anything.

Is liposuction in Turkey safe?

Liposuction in Turkey can be safe when it is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon in an accredited hospital with proper anaesthetic care and sensible limits on how much fat is removed in one session. Med World Türkiye works with partner surgeons in JCI-accredited hospitals. Risks include bleeding, infection, uneven contours, asymmetry, numbness, fluid collections, burns with energy devices and, rarely, blood clots or fat embolism. Your surgeon explains these before you consent.

How long should I stay in Istanbul after liposuction?

Plan to stay in Istanbul for about 5–7 days for liposuction. This covers the consultation on arrival, surgery with same-day discharge or one night in hospital, and check-ups over the following days before your surgeon confirms you are fit to fly. Treating several areas, 360 lipo or combining liposuction with other procedures may need a longer stay, so a flexible return ticket is sensible.

How long is the recovery after liposuction?

Most people return to desk work after about 1–2 weeks, depending on how many areas were treated, and wear a compression garment for several weeks, as the surgeon advises. Strenuous exercise usually waits until the surgeon agrees, often around 4–6 weeks. Bruising fades over the first weeks, but swelling can take up to 6 months to settle completely, so the final shape appears gradually. Larger-volume or 360 liposuction usually means a longer recovery.

Are liposuction results permanent?

The fat cells removed by liposuction do not grow back, so the change in shape is long-lasting if your weight stays stable. However, the remaining fat cells can still grow if you gain weight, sometimes in untreated areas, and the skin continues to age naturally. The final result is usually visible after several months, once swelling has settled. Pregnancy and significant weight changes can alter the result.

What is the difference between ultrasound-assisted and traditional liposuction?

Traditional tumescent liposuction loosens fat with fluid and removes it with a cannula moved by the surgeon. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction, often searched for by a device brand name, adds ultrasound energy to break up fat first, which can help in firmer, fibrous areas or repeat treatments. It is not automatically better, carries a small risk of burns and does not reliably tighten loose skin. Your surgeon recommends a technique after examining you.

Does liposuction hurt, and will there be scars?

You are under anaesthesia during liposuction, and afterwards most people feel sore and bruised, a little like after a hard workout, for the first week or two; pain relief and the compression garment help. The incisions are small, usually a few millimetres, and are placed in natural creases or areas that clothing covers where possible. They leave small scars that usually fade over months, although they do not disappear completely.

How do I choose a liposuction surgeon in Turkey I can trust?

Choose a board-certified plastic surgeon, and check that the procedure takes place in an accredited hospital with an anaesthetist rather than in an office setting. Ask which areas and technique are planned, how much fat they intend to remove in one session and whether several areas are being combined, as larger procedures carry more risk. A careful surgeon checks your health and weight first and explains that liposuction shapes the body rather than treating weight. Through Med World Türkiye, your written plan names the partner surgeon and hospital, and you can show it to a doctor at home before you agree.
