Quick answer

What is a knee replacement?

A knee replacement, or knee arthroplasty, is surgery that replaces the worn surfaces of the knee joint, most often damaged by osteoarthritis, with metal and plastic implant parts. It can be total or partial. Knee replacement in Turkey usually takes 1–2 hours under spinal or general anaesthesia, typically with 2–5 nights in hospital and about 2–3 weeks in Istanbul.

Knee Replacement in Istanbul: overview

A knee replacement, or knee arthroplasty, replaces the damaged surfaces of the knee joint with metal and plastic implant parts. It is usually considered when osteoarthritis or another joint condition causes pain and stiffness that limit daily life and have not improved enough with physiotherapy, weight management, pain relief or injections. For a knee replacement in Turkey, Med World Türkiye coordinates your treatment with independent, licensed partner orthopaedic surgeons who operate in JCI-accredited partner hospitals in Istanbul. Before you travel, a partner surgeon reviews your recent X-rays, medical history and medication and suggests whether a total or partial knee replacement is likely to suit you.

A knee replacement is major surgery, and recovery takes months of regular exercise rather than days. Physiotherapists usually help you stand and walk with a frame or crutches within a day of surgery, and the exercises you continue at home largely decide how well the knee bends and straightens. Pain, swelling and stiffness are common for several months. Risks include infection, blood clots, persistent pain or stiffness, and loosening or wear that may one day need revision surgery. We organise the surrounding logistics – airport transfers, a hotel near the hospital, an interpreter and remote aftercare follow-up. Med World Türkiye does not offer rehabilitation stays, so you continue rehabilitation at home with a physiotherapist.

Which Knee Replacement techniques are available?

Total knee replacement

In a total knee replacement, the surgeon resurfaces the ends of the thigh bone and shin bone with metal components, places a plastic spacer between them and sometimes resurfaces the back of the kneecap. The parts are usually fixed with bone cement. It suits arthritis that affects more than one part of the knee and is the most common type of knee replacement.

Partial (unicompartmental) knee replacement

When arthritis is limited to one compartment of the knee, usually the inner side, a partial knee replacement replaces only that part and keeps the healthy bone and ligaments. Recovery is often quicker and the knee may feel more natural, but it only suits a minority of people with stable ligaments, and arthritis can later develop in the rest of the knee.

Robotic-assisted knee replacement

Some partner hospitals use a robotic arm with a plan based on a CT scan or measurements taken during surgery, helping the surgeon cut the bone and position the implant as planned. The surgeon performs the operation throughout; the robot is a precision tool, not a promise of a better result, and long-term evidence that it improves function compared with conventional surgery is still limited.

Both knees: same day or staged

If both knees are badly affected, some surgeons replace them in one operation, while others recommend two separate operations weeks or months apart. Replacing both knees at once means one anaesthetic and one recovery period, but the risks, including blood clots and heart and lung complications, are higher and early rehabilitation is harder, so surgeons decide case by case.

Not sure which option suits you?

Send your photos, scans or reports. A partner specialist reviews them and you receive a written plan and quote before you book anything.

Why choose Med World Türkiye for Knee Replacement?

  • Surgeon review before you travel

A partner orthopaedic surgeon reviews your recent X-rays, medical history and medication and suggests whether a total or partial knee replacement is likely to suit you before you book.

  • JCI-accredited partner hospitals

Surgery and your hospital nights take place in JCI-accredited partner hospitals, with anaesthesia given by an anaesthetist, blood-clot prevention and physiotherapy on the ward.

  • Itemised written quote

The written quote from the partner hospital lists the technique, the implant, hospital nights, physiotherapy on the ward and every other cost before you book anything, so you can see exactly what is and is not included.

  • One coordinated plan and aftercare

One coordinator arranges the consultation, surgery, hotel and transfers, and after you fly home passes your questions and your physiotherapist's notes to the partner surgeon for follow-up.

Who is a good candidate for Knee Replacement?

  • Adults with knee pain and stiffness from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or an old injury that limit walking, sleep or daily life, with damage confirmed on X-rays.
  • People whose symptoms have not improved enough with physiotherapy, weight management, pain relief or injections.
  • People well enough for an operation and an anaesthetic, who are ready to do daily exercises for months and can arrange physiotherapy at home.
  • Non-smokers, or smokers able to stop before and after surgery for as long as the surgeon advises, as smoking raises the risk of wound and healing problems.
  • Surgery is not a good idea if you have an active infection anywhere in the body, including in the skin, teeth or urinary tract, uncontrolled diabetes or heart or lung disease, a history of blood clots that has not been assessed, or cannot take part in rehabilitation after surgery.

Knee Replacement: is it right for me?

Questions people ask us in their own words, with straight answers.

I’m 55 and my doctor at home says I’m too young for a knee replacement, but the pain is wrecking my sleep. Will a surgeon in Istanbul even consider me?

It depends more on your knee than on your age. Surgeons look at how badly the joint is damaged on standing X-rays, how much the pain limits you and whether physiotherapy, weight management, pain relief or injections have helped enough. Age matters because a younger, more active person is more likely to need a revision operation one day, which is more complex than the first. A partial knee replacement may be an option if the arthritis is limited to one part of the knee. Send recent standing X-rays and your history, and a partner surgeon tells you honestly whether surgery is advisable now.

I’m quite overweight and I worry a surgeon will turn me down. Can I still have a knee replacement in Turkey, or do I have to lose weight first?

Often you can, but extra weight raises the risk of wound problems, infection and blood clots, and it puts more load on the new knee. Some surgeons ask you to lose some weight before surgery, especially if you also have diabetes, heart or breathing problems or sleep apnoea; others operate once these conditions are well controlled. Share your height, weight, medication and other conditions along with your X-rays, and the partner surgeon explains whether surgery is reasonable now or what would make it safer. Losing some weight and staying active before surgery usually helps recovery too.

Who does my physio once I fly home to Canada? I don’t want to end up stuck with no rehab after having surgery abroad.

You arrange it at home, ideally before you travel. Med World Türkiye does not offer rehabilitation stays, so after your weeks in Istanbul your recovery continues with a physiotherapist where you live. Book one in advance and check they are happy to see someone operated on abroad. Before you leave Istanbul, ask for your operation notes, implant details and an exercise plan to hand over. Your coordinator stays in touch and passes your physiotherapist’s notes and your questions to the partner surgeon. The daily exercises you do over the following months largely decide how well your knee bends and straightens.

I’m terrified of getting an infection after I’m back in the US. What happens if something goes wrong once I’ve left Turkey?

Contact a doctor near you promptly, and your coordinator in parallel. Fever, wound redness or discharge, calf pain or swelling, chest pain or breathlessness need urgent attention locally, from your own doctor or an emergency department, because a joint infection or a blood clot cannot wait for a flight. Your coordinator passes photos, results and questions to the partner surgeon, who advises remotely. Bring your operation notes and implant details home so local doctors know exactly what was done. Before you travel, check whether your health or travel insurance covers complications of treatment abroad.

I’m 67, widowed and would be travelling from the UK on my own. Is it realistic to have a knee replacement abroad without anyone with me?

It is possible, but a companion makes it much easier. For the first weeks you walk with a frame or crutches, and showering, dressing and carrying things can be hard alone. Your coordinator arranges airport transfers, a hotel near the hospital and an interpreter, and you can ask the airline for airport assistance on the way home. Think about home too: you may need help with shopping, cooking and getting to physiotherapy, and surgeons usually advise not driving for at least 6 weeks. If no one can come with you, tell us early so your plan takes that into account.

The idea of being awake while they operate on my knee scares me. Will I hear everything with a spinal anaesthetic, or can I choose to be asleep?

Usually you are aware of very little. With a spinal anaesthetic you are numb from the waist down, and many people are also given sedation, so they doze through the operation and remember little of it. Others have a general anaesthetic and are fully asleep. The choice depends on your health and the anaesthetist’s advice, as each option has its own risks and benefits. Mention your worry when you send your records, and discuss the options with the anaesthetist at your assessment before you sign the consent form.

What does a Knee Replacement trip to Istanbul look like?

  1. 1

    Before travel – X-rays & surgeon review

You send recent standing X-rays of the knee, your medical history and a list of your medication, including any blood thinners. A partner orthopaedic surgeon reviews them, and you receive a written plan and an itemised quote before you book anything. It is wise to arrange a physiotherapist at home before you leave.

  2. 2

    Day 1 – Arrival & assessment

After an airport transfer to your hotel, the surgeon examines your knee and confirms the plan. Blood tests, a heart check and an anaesthetic assessment follow, including your blood-clot risk, plus a CT scan if robotic planning needs one, before you sign the consent form.

  3. 3

    Day 2 – Surgery & hospital stay

A knee replacement usually takes 1–2 hours under spinal or general anaesthesia. You stay 2–5 nights in hospital, receive blood-clot prevention and are usually helped to stand and walk with a frame or crutches within a day, as physiotherapists start your exercises.

  4. 4

    Days 3–21 – Exercises, check-ups & flying home

After discharge you rest at the hotel, keep doing your exercises and attend wound checks; stitches or clips are usually removed after about 10–14 days. Long flights raise the risk of blood clots after joint replacement, so plan for about 2–3 weeks in Istanbul; your surgeon confirms when you are fit to fly.

What is recovery like after Knee Replacement?

Recovery after a knee replacement is gradual, and the exercises you do each day matter as much as the operation. In the first 2 weeks, expect pain, swelling and bruising; you walk with a frame or crutches, take pain relief regularly so you can exercise, and follow the blood-clot prevention you are given, such as injections or tablets and compression stockings. Stitches or clips are usually removed after about 10–14 days. From about weeks 3 to 6, you work with a physiotherapist at home on bending and straightening the knee and on strength, and most people move from crutches to a stick. Surgeons usually advise not driving for at least 6 weeks after a total knee replacement, or 3 weeks after a partial one, and only when you can do an emergency stop. Desk work is often possible after about 6 weeks; physical jobs take longer. Swelling and stiffness can last for several months, and the knee keeps improving for up to a year. Kneeling may stay uncomfortable. Contact the surgeon promptly about fever, wound redness or discharge, calf pain or swelling, chest pain or breathlessness.

Knee Replacement in Turkey: how much does it cost?

The price of a knee replacement in Turkey depends mainly on whether you need a total or partial replacement, one knee or both, the implant chosen and whether robotic assistance is used. The partner surgeon, the partner hospital, the number of nights in hospital and in the hotel, and blood-clot prevention medication also affect the total. Treatment in Turkey often costs less than private treatment in countries such as the US, Canada, the UK and much of Western Europe, mainly because of lower operating costs, but price should never be the only reason to choose a surgeon. With Med World Türkiye, a partner orthopaedic surgeon first reviews your X-rays and medical history; you then receive a written, itemised quote from the partner hospital before you book anything.

What your written quote itemises

  • Surgeon and anaesthesia fees
  • Implant type and documentation
  • Hospital nights, operating theatre and pre-operative tests
  • Physiotherapy on the ward and walking aids
  • Hotel accommodation and airport transfers, if requested
  • Interpreter and remote aftercare follow-up

Med World Türkiye does not publish a price list. Every price comes from a written, itemised quote issued by the partner hospital after a surgeon has reviewed your photos, scans or medical records.

Knee Replacement: frequently asked questions

How much does a knee replacement cost in Turkey?

The cost of a knee replacement in Turkey depends on whether you need a total or partial replacement, one knee or both, the implant, whether robotic assistance is used, the partner surgeon and hospital, and nights in hospital and in the hotel. The surgeon review is free: you send your X-rays and medical history, a partner orthopaedic surgeon reviews them, and you then receive a written, itemised quote from the partner hospital before you book anything.

Is knee replacement surgery in Turkey safe?

Knee replacement in Turkey can be safe when it is performed by a qualified orthopaedic surgeon in an accredited hospital with proper anaesthetic care, infection control and blood-clot prevention. Med World Türkiye works with partner surgeons in JCI-accredited hospitals. A knee replacement is major surgery, and risks include infection, blood clots, bleeding, persistent pain or stiffness, nerve or blood-vessel injury, and loosening or wear that may need revision surgery. Your surgeon explains these before you consent.

How long is recovery after a knee replacement, and is it painful?

Recovery after a knee replacement takes months. Pain and swelling are usual in the first weeks, and regular pain relief helps you do the exercises that bend and strengthen the knee. Most people walk with crutches or a stick for about 6 weeks, return to desk work after about 6 weeks and to most everyday activities within about 3 months, while the knee keeps improving for up to a year. The scar runs down the front of the knee and fades over time.

How long should I stay in Istanbul after a knee replacement?

Plan to stay in Istanbul for about 2–3 weeks for a knee replacement. This allows a few nights in hospital, early physiotherapy, wound checks and removal of stitches or clips before your surgeon confirms you are fit to fly. Long flights raise the risk of blood clots, so surgeons usually advise compression stockings, any prescribed blood thinner, an aisle seat and moving around during the flight. A flexible return ticket and airport assistance are sensible.

How long does a knee replacement last?

Most modern knee replacements last for many years, and many last 15 years or more. How long yours lasts depends on your age, weight, activity level and how the implant was positioned. Over time the parts can wear or loosen, and some people eventually need a revision operation, which is more complex than the first. Younger, more active people are more likely to need one in their lifetime. Keep your implant details for any future surgeon.

Is robotic knee replacement better than conventional surgery?

Robotic-assisted knee replacement uses a robotic arm and a detailed plan to help the surgeon cut the bone and position the implant precisely. Studies show it can improve how accurately the implant is placed, but long-term evidence that it gives better function, less pain or a longer-lasting knee than conventional surgery is still limited. The surgeon's experience matters most. Your partner surgeon explains whether robotic assistance is available and suitable for your knee.

Do I need a partial or a total knee replacement?

A partial knee replacement replaces only one worn part of the knee and suits people whose arthritis is limited to one compartment and whose ligaments are intact. It often means a quicker recovery and a more natural-feeling knee, but arthritis can later develop in the rest of the joint. A total knee replacement suits wider damage and is more common. Your surgeon decides after reviewing your standing X-rays and examining your knee.

How do I choose a hospital and surgeon in Turkey I can trust for a knee replacement?

Choose an orthopaedic surgeon who performs knee replacements regularly, in a hospital with an international accreditation such as JCI, which you can check on the Joint Commission International website. Ask which implant is planned, how the hospital prevents infection and blood clots, and when physiotherapy starts. A careful surgeon reviews your standing X-rays and health history before offering surgery and tells you if other treatment should come first. Through Med World Türkiye, your written plan names the partner surgeon, hospital and implant, and you can show it to your own doctor before you decide.
