Quick answer
What is a breast reduction?
A breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is surgery that removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin to make the breasts smaller, lighter and better proportioned, lifting them at the same time. It is often chosen for back, neck or shoulder pain. A breast reduction in Turkey usually takes 2–3 hours under general anaesthesia, typically with 1–2 nights in hospital and about 7–10 days in Istanbul.

Breast Reduction in Istanbul: overview
A breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin so that the breasts are smaller, lighter and in better proportion to your body. It also lifts the breasts and can make the areola smaller. Many people choose it because heavy breasts cause back, neck or shoulder pain, bra-strap grooves, rashes under the breasts or difficulty exercising. For a breast reduction in Turkey, Med World Türkiye coordinates your treatment with independent, licensed partner plastic surgeons who operate in JCI-accredited partner hospitals in Istanbul. Before you travel, a partner surgeon reviews your photos, symptoms, medical history and any breast screening results and suggests a technique.
A breast reduction is a major operation. You usually spend 1–2 nights in hospital, sometimes with drains, wear a support bra for several weeks and avoid heavy lifting for around 6 weeks. Scars run around the areola and down to the crease, often along the crease as well, and fade over a year or more. Risks include changes in nipple sensation, slow wound healing, asymmetry and blood clots, and the ability to breastfeed may be reduced or lost. The removed tissue is usually sent for laboratory examination. We organise the surrounding logistics – airport transfers, a hotel near the hospital, an interpreter and remote aftercare follow-up – so you can focus on recovery.

Which Breast Reduction techniques are available?
Vertical (lollipop) reduction
The incision runs around the areola and straight down to the breast crease, with no scar along the crease. It suits small to moderate reductions and gives a narrower, more projecting shape, although the lower part of the breast can look slightly puckered for some weeks while it settles.
Anchor (inverted-T) reduction
The anchor, or Wise pattern, adds an incision along the breast crease to the lollipop scar. It lets the surgeon remove more skin and tissue, so it is often used for larger reductions or very heavy, low breasts. The scars are longer, and the point where the vertical and horizontal scars meet is the area most prone to slow healing.
Pedicle techniques and free nipple graft
In most reductions the nipple stays attached to a strip of tissue (a pedicle) that carries its blood and nerve supply, which helps preserve sensation and, for some, the ability to breastfeed. For very large reductions, the surgeon may remove the nipple and replace it as a graft; this usually means losing nipple sensation and the ability to breastfeed, so it is discussed in advance.
Liposuction-only reduction
When the breasts are mainly fatty and the skin is firm, liposuction alone can reduce their size through tiny incisions, with small scars and a shorter recovery. It cannot remove dense glandular tissue or tighten loose skin, so the reduction and lift are limited and it suits only a small group of people; breast imaging is often advised first.

Who is a good candidate for Breast Reduction?
- Adults whose large, heavy breasts cause back, neck or shoulder pain, bra-strap grooves, rashes under the breasts or difficulty exercising.
- People whose weight has been stable for some months and who are close to their goal weight, as later weight changes can alter breast size again.
- Non-smokers, or smokers able to stop before and after surgery for as long as the surgeon advises, as smoking raises the risk of wound-healing problems.
- Women who are not pregnant or breastfeeding and understand that the ability to breastfeed after a reduction may be reduced or lost, and that a future pregnancy can change the breasts again.
- Surgery is not a good idea if you have an uninvestigated breast lump or abnormal screening result, uncontrolled diabetes or heart or lung disease, a history of blood clots that has not been assessed, or are not prepared to accept visible scars.
Breast Reduction: is it right for me?
Questions people ask us in their own words, with straight answers.
The NHS turned me down for a breast reduction because my BMI is too high. Would a surgeon in Turkey still operate, and would that actually be safe?
It depends on the surgeon’s assessment of your overall health rather than on a single number. A higher body weight raises the risk of slow wound healing, infection and blood clots after a reduction, and surgeons prefer your weight to be stable and close to your goal, because later weight loss can change the breasts again. Some surgeons will operate after a careful assessment; others will advise losing some weight first. Send your height, weight, weight history, symptoms and medical history, and the partner surgeon can give an honest view of whether surgery now is sensible and what would make it safer.
I’m 19 and my breasts give me constant back and shoulder pain. Am I too young for a reduction, or should I wait a few more years?
Not necessarily, but timing matters. Surgeons generally want the breasts to have stopped growing, which they judge partly from whether your size has stayed the same for some time. Tissue that is removed does not grow back, but weight gain, pregnancy or hormonal changes can enlarge the breasts again. A reduction can also reduce or remove the ability to breastfeed, which is worth weighing at your age. Send photos, a description of your symptoms and how long your size has been stable, and the partner surgeon can say whether going ahead now makes sense or whether waiting is wiser.
I’m a nurse on long shifts, moving and lifting patients all day. How much time off should I realistically plan after a breast reduction?
Plan for longer than the desk-work estimate. Desk work is usually possible after about 2–3 weeks, but jobs involving lifting or physical effort need longer, and heavy lifting and upper-body effort should be avoided for around 6 weeks, or until your surgeon agrees. Moving and handling patients is exactly that kind of strain, so it is sensible to plan for around 6 weeks off or for lighter duties. Tiredness in the first weeks is common too. Tell the surgeon about your job when you send your photos, so your plan and any fitness-for-work note can be realistic.
Will the tissue removed in my breast reduction be checked in a lab, and how would I get the results once I’m back home?
Usually, yes, but ask for it in writing before you travel. The removed tissue is usually sent for laboratory examination, and the itemised quote should show whether this is included. The results often arrive after you have flown home, so ask how they will be sent to you, and plan to share them with your own doctor. If anything unexpected is found, your doctor at home can arrange any further tests. Bring recent breast screening results too, as depending on your age the surgeon may ask for a mammogram or ultrasound before surgery.
I’m 30 and want children later. If I have a breast reduction now, will I still be able to breastfeed?
Possibly, but it cannot be promised. In most reductions the nipple stays attached to a strip of tissue that carries its blood and nerve supply, which helps preserve sensation and, for some people, the ability to breastfeed. Even so, breastfeeding may be reduced or lost, and with a free nipple graft, used for very large reductions, it is usually lost. A future pregnancy can also enlarge the breasts again. If breastfeeding matters to you, say so when you send your photos, so the surgeon can explain which technique suits you, or whether waiting until after children makes more sense.
I’m a very large cup size and I’d love to be a small C. Can I choose exactly how small I go with a reduction?
Not exactly, but you can describe your goal and the surgeon explains what is realistic. Cup sizes vary between bra brands and countries, so surgeons plan by proportion to your frame rather than by a letter. How small you can go also depends on keeping a healthy blood supply to the nipple and on the shape of your breasts, and a very large reduction can mean a free nipple graft. The final size and shape take several months to show while swelling settles. Send photos from the front and side and describe what you hope for, and the surgeon will suggest a realistic size before you travel.
What does a Breast Reduction trip to Istanbul look like?
- 1
Before travel – Photos & surgeon review
You send photos of your breasts from the front and side, a description of your symptoms, your medical history and any recent breast screening results; depending on your age, the surgeon may ask for a mammogram or ultrasound first. You then receive a written plan and an itemised quote before you book anything.
- 2
Day 1 – Arrival & consultation
After an airport transfer to your hotel, the surgeon examines you, discusses the size you hope for, marks the planned incisions and explains where the scars will sit. Blood tests and an anaesthetic assessment follow, including a check of your blood-clot risk, before you sign the consent form.
- 3
Day 2 – Surgery & hospital stay
A breast reduction usually takes 2–3 hours under general anaesthesia, sometimes longer for very large reductions. You stay 1–2 nights in hospital, may have drains, wear a support bra and are helped to get up and walk early to lower the risk of blood clots.
- 4
Days 3–10 – Check-ups & flying home
You rest at the hotel and attend wound checks, and drains are removed once fluid output falls. Surgeons usually advise not flying for about a week after major surgery and recommend compression stockings and moving around during the flight; your surgeon confirms when you are fit to fly.
What is recovery like after Breast Reduction?
Recovery after a breast reduction is gradual. In the first week, expect soreness, swelling, bruising and tightness across the chest; you wear a support bra day and night, sleep on your back with your upper body raised and take short walks to help prevent blood clots. Drains, if used, usually come out after a day or two. Desk work is usually possible after about 2–3 weeks, and you should not drive until you can wear a seatbelt and brake hard comfortably. Avoid heavy lifting, upper-body exercise and sleeping on your front for around 6 weeks, or until your surgeon agrees. Swelling can last for around 3 months, and the breasts settle into their final shape over several months. Small areas of slow healing where the scars meet are common and usually heal with dressings. Silicone gel or sheets and sun protection help the scars, which fade over a year or more. Contact the surgeon promptly about fever, increasing redness or pain, wound discharge, a darkening nipple or sudden swelling on one side.
Breast Reduction in Turkey: how much does it cost?
The price of a breast reduction in Turkey depends mainly on how much tissue needs to be removed and on the technique – vertical, anchor, free nipple graft or liposuction alone. The partner surgeon, the partner hospital, the number of nights in hospital and in the hotel, and any combined procedures, such as liposuction of the sides, also affect the total. Treatment in Turkey often costs less than private treatment in countries such as the US, Canada, the UK and much of Western Europe, mainly because of lower operating costs, but price should never be the only reason to choose a surgeon. With Med World Türkiye, a partner plastic surgeon first reviews your photos and medical history; you then receive a written, itemised quote from the partner hospital before you book anything.
What your written quote itemises
- Surgeon and anaesthesia fees
- Hospital nights, operating theatre and pre-operative tests
- Laboratory examination of the removed tissue
- Support bra, dressings and medication
- Hotel accommodation and airport transfers, if requested
- Interpreter and remote aftercare follow-up
Med World Türkiye does not publish a price list. Every price comes from a written, itemised quote issued by the partner hospital after a surgeon has reviewed your photos, scans or medical records.
Breast Reduction: frequently asked questions
How much does a breast reduction cost in Turkey?
The cost of a breast reduction in Turkey depends on how much tissue is removed, the technique (vertical, anchor, free nipple graft or liposuction alone), the partner surgeon and hospital, nights in hospital and in the hotel, and any combined procedures. The surgeon review is free: you send photos, your symptoms and your medical history, a partner plastic surgeon reviews them, and you then receive a written, itemised quote from the partner hospital before you book anything.
Is a breast reduction in Turkey safe?
A breast reduction in Turkey can be safe when it is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon in an accredited hospital with proper anaesthetic care and blood-clot prevention. Med World Türkiye works with partner surgeons in JCI-accredited hospitals. A breast reduction is major surgery, and risks include bleeding, infection, slow healing where the scars meet, poor scarring, asymmetry, changes in nipple sensation, a reduced ability to breastfeed, blood clots and, rarely, loss of part of the nipple. Smoking raises the risk of wound-healing problems.
How long should I stay in Istanbul for a breast reduction?
Plan to stay in Istanbul for about 7–10 days for a breast reduction. This allows the consultation on arrival, surgery with 1–2 nights in hospital, drain removal and wound checks before your surgeon confirms you are fit to fly, which is usually about a week after surgery. Very large reductions or combined procedures may need a longer stay, so a flexible return ticket is sensible.
How long is recovery after a breast reduction?
Most people return to desk work after about 2–3 weeks; jobs involving lifting or physical effort need longer. You wear a support bra for several weeks and avoid heavy lifting, upper-body exercise and sleeping on your front for around 6 weeks, or until your surgeon agrees. Swelling can last for around 3 months, and the final shape takes several months to settle. Tiredness in the first weeks is common, so plan for help at home after you fly back.
Are breast reduction results permanent?
The tissue removed in a breast reduction does not grow back, so the smaller size is usually long-lasting. However, the breasts can become larger again with significant weight gain, pregnancy or hormonal changes, and the skin keeps ageing, so some sagging can return over the years. Keeping your weight stable helps the result last. The final shape is visible after several months, once swelling has settled, and the scars keep fading for a year or more.
Does a breast reduction leave scars, and is it painful?
Yes, a breast reduction always leaves scars: around the areola and down to the crease with a vertical technique, and along the crease as well with the anchor pattern. They are red at first and usually fade to paler lines over a year or more, although some people form thicker scars. Pain is usually strongest in the first few days and is managed with prescribed pain relief; soreness and tightness then ease over the following weeks.
What is the difference between a vertical and an anchor breast reduction?
A vertical, or lollipop, breast reduction leaves a scar around the areola and straight down to the crease, and suits small to moderate reductions. An anchor, or inverted-T, reduction adds a scar along the breast crease, allowing more skin and tissue to be removed, so it is often used for larger or very low breasts. Liposuction alone suits only mainly fatty breasts with firm skin. Your surgeon recommends a technique after examining you.
How do I choose a breast reduction surgeon in Turkey I can trust?
Choose a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs breast reductions regularly, in an accredited hospital with an anaesthetist and overnight care. Ask which technique and incision pattern they suggest, how much tissue they expect to remove and how the tissue will be sent for pathology. A careful surgeon asks about your health, smoking and any family history of breast cancer, and may ask for a recent breast scan. Through Med World Türkiye, your written plan names the partner surgeon and hospital, and you can show it to your own doctor before you agree.
