Quick answer

What is a beard transplant?

A beard transplant, or facial hair transplant, moves individual hair follicles, usually from the back of the scalp, into patchy or thin areas of the beard, moustache or sideburns using follicular unit extraction (FUE). A beard transplant in Turkey is performed under local anaesthesia in one session of several hours, with no hospital stay, and usually needs about 2–3 days in Istanbul.

Beard Transplant in Istanbul: overview

A beard transplant, also called a facial hair transplant, moves your own hair follicles into areas where beard growth is patchy, thin or absent – the cheeks, jawline, chin, moustache or sideburns – or into scars. Follicles are usually taken one by one from the back of the scalp using follicular unit extraction (FUE), and sometimes from under the chin. For a beard transplant in Turkey, Med World Türkiye coordinates your treatment with independent, licensed partner physicians at partner clinics in Istanbul, where a doctor designs the beard line and performs or supervises the key surgical steps. Before you travel, a partner physician reviews photos of your face and scalp and your medical history.

A beard transplant is surgery, and the result takes patience. For the first week or so the face is red, with small scabs around each graft and sometimes swelling, and most transplanted hairs shed after about 2–4 weeks before regrowing gradually over many months. Risks include infection, folliculitis and ingrown hairs, small marks in the beard area, patchy growth, hairs growing at an unnatural angle and thinning of the donor area. The grafts also come from the donor hair you may need for a future scalp transplant, so the physician plans with that in mind. We organise the surrounding logistics – airport transfers, a hotel near the clinic, an interpreter and remote aftercare follow-up.

Which Beard Transplant techniques are available?

FUE from the back of the scalp

Follicles are extracted one at a time with a micro-punch from the back of the scalp, where hair is usually coarse enough to blend with facial hair, leaving tiny marks that short hair normally hides. Single-hair grafts are generally used at the edges and on the cheeks for a soft line, and denser areas may take two-hair grafts. Scalp hair can be finer than beard hair, so it may look slightly different.

Channel opening or implanter pen

The grafts are placed either into tiny channels opened first with a fine sapphire or steel blade, or with an implanter pen that opens the channel and places the follicle in one step, often called DHI. In the beard, the angle and direction of each graft matter more than density alone, because facial hair grows close to the skin and changes direction across the face.

Full beard, partial areas and scars

A transplant can fill the whole beard or only selected areas, such as the moustache, goatee, cheek line or sideburns, or camouflage a scar from injury, surgery or cleft lip repair. Grafts may not grow as well in scar tissue, and a second session is sometimes needed for more density; the physician explains this before you book.

Donor limits and combined procedures

Donor hair is limited and does not grow back once removed. If you may need a scalp hair transplant later, the physician plans the beard so that enough donor hair remains, and may use hair from under the chin. Combining a beard and scalp transplant in one trip lengthens the procedure and uses more donor hair, so it is decided case by case.

Why choose Med World Türkiye for Beard Transplant?

  • Physician review before you travel

A partner physician reviews photos of your face and scalp and your medical history, checks whether your donor area can support the beard you want and explains what is realistic before you book.

  • Physician-led partner clinics

A licensed doctor designs the beard line and performs or supervises extraction and implantation at partner clinics in Istanbul; Med World Türkiye coordinates your trip and does not provide treatment itself.

  • Itemised written quote

The written quote from the partner clinic lists the areas to be treated, the planned approach, medication, aftercare products and any hotel nights or transfers, so you can see what is and is not included before you book.

  • One coordinated plan and aftercare

One coordinator arranges the consultation, procedure, hotel and transfers, and after you fly home passes your progress photos and questions to the partner physician for follow-up.

Who is a good candidate for Beard Transplant?

  • Men with a patchy, thin or uneven beard, moustache or sideburns, or with gaps caused by scars or burns.
  • Adults whose facial hair has had time to mature, as a beard can keep filling in during early adulthood.
  • People with a healthy donor area at the back of the scalp, who understand that the same donor hair may be needed for a future scalp transplant.
  • Those with realistic expectations who accept that the final look takes many months and that a second session is sometimes needed for more density.
  • Treatment is not a good idea if your beard loss is caused by active alopecia areata or another skin or medical condition that has not been assessed, if your donor area is weak, or if you have a bleeding disorder or uncontrolled diabetes.

Beard Transplant: is it right for me?

Questions people ask us in their own words, with straight answers.

I’m in my mid-20s and my beard is still patchy. Should I wait or have a transplant now?

It is often worth waiting a little. Facial hair can keep filling in during early adulthood, so a patchy beard in your mid-20s may still thicken, and a transplant done now uses donor hair you cannot get back. Some men first grow the beard out for a while or ask a doctor about medical options. If the patches have stayed the same for some years, or a gap is caused by a scar, a transplant may be reasonable. Send photos of your face with a few weeks of growth and of the back of your scalp, and the partner physician tells you whether waiting makes sense.

Will a beard made from scalp hair look different from my real beard?

Usually it blends well, but it may not match perfectly. Hair from the back of the scalp is chosen because it is generally coarse enough to blend with facial hair, yet it can be finer, softer or straighter than your own beard hair, and it may grow longer. Placement matters more than anything: single-hair grafts at the edges and on the cheeks, and each graft angled to follow natural beard growth, which lies close to the skin. Many people trim the transplanted areas more often. Send close-up photos of your beard and the back of your scalp, so the physician can compare the two.

My beard patches are caused by alopecia areata. Can a transplant fill them in?

Usually not while the condition is active. In alopecia areata the immune system attacks hair follicles, and transplanted hair can be lost in the same way, so grafts placed during active disease often do not last. A dermatologist should first confirm the cause of your patches and manage it. If the condition has been inactive for a long time, some physicians consider a small test area, but there is no certainty that the grafts will survive. Send your dermatologist’s letter and photos of the patches, and the partner physician tells you honestly whether a transplant makes sense for you.

What if my beard still looks patchy after the transplant? Would I need a second session?

In the first months, patchiness is common and it is too early to judge. Most transplanted hairs shed after about 2–4 weeks, new growth usually starts after about 3–4 months, and the final look often takes up to about a year. If the density is still uneven once the beard has matured, some people choose a second session, provided enough donor hair remains. Whether a second session costs extra depends on the partner clinic, so ask before you book and make sure the answer is in your written plan. Keep sending progress photos so the physician can follow your growth.

I wear a skin fade. Will the back of my head show marks or look thin?

Usually the marks are hard to see, but a very short fade can show them. FUE leaves tiny dot-like marks in the donor area that short hair normally hides, and taking too many grafts from one zone can make the back of the scalp look thin. A careful physician spreads extraction across the donor area and limits the number of grafts to what it can safely give. If you keep a skin fade or shave your head, say so at the review, because it affects how many grafts are taken and from where. Send photos of the back and sides of your scalp at your usual length.

I smoke and vape. Do I have to stop before a beard transplant?

It is wise to stop, at least around the procedure. Nicotine from cigarettes or vapes narrows small blood vessels, which can slow healing and may reduce how well the grafts take. The partner physician usually asks you to stop before and after the procedure for as long as they advise, so be honest about how much you smoke or vape. Nicotine patches and gums still contain nicotine, so ask before relying on them. If stopping is hard, give yourself time before you book. Send your medical history and smoking habits with your photos, so the physician can plan around them.

What does a Beard Transplant trip to Istanbul look like?

  1. 1

Before travel – Photos & physician review

You send photos of your face from several angles and of the back of your scalp, with your medical history and a list of your medication. A partner physician reviews them, and you receive a written plan and an itemised quote before you book anything.

  2. 2

    Day 1 – Arrival & beard design

After an airport transfer to your hotel, the physician examines your face and donor area, draws the planned beard line with you and confirms the areas to be treated. Blood tests are usually done before you sign the consent form, and some patients have the procedure the same day.

  3. 3

Day 2 – Beard transplant procedure

The donor area at the back of the scalp is trimmed short, and the procedure is performed under local anaesthesia over several hours, with breaks. The physician places each graft at the angle and direction of natural beard growth. Afterwards the face is often red and slightly swollen, and you return to the hotel the same day.

  4. 4

    Day 3 – Check-up, first wash & flying home

The clinic checks the donor and beard areas, performs or explains the first gentle wash and gives you written instructions on washing, sleeping and shaving. A beard transplant does not usually prevent flying, and most people fly home on day 2 or 3; your physician confirms when you are fit to fly.

What is recovery like after Beard Transplant?

In the first days after a beard transplant, the face is red and may be swollen, sometimes around the eyes, and small scabs form around each graft. You wash gently as instructed, avoid touching or rubbing the area, sleep with your head raised and avoid exercise, saunas and swimming until the physician agrees. The scabs usually fall away within about 1–2 weeks, and most people return to desk work after about a week, depending on how visible the redness is. Do not shave or trim the beard area until the physician says it is safe. Between about 2 and 4 weeks, most transplanted hairs shed; this is expected, as the follicles stay in place. New growth usually starts after about 3–4 months and fills in gradually, and the final look takes many months, often up to about a year. Results vary with donor hair quality and how well the grafts take, and some people choose a second session for more density. Contact the clinic promptly about increasing redness, pain, pus, spreading swelling or fever.

Beard Transplant in Turkey: how much does it cost?

The price of a beard transplant in Turkey depends mainly on the areas treated – a full beard, or only the moustache, goatee, cheeks or sideburns – the density you want, and so how many grafts your donor area can safely provide. The technique, the level of physician involvement, whether scar tissue is treated, any combined scalp transplant, hotel nights and the partner clinic also affect the total. Treatment in Turkey often costs less than private treatment in countries such as the US, Canada, the UK and much of Western Europe, mainly because of lower operating costs, but price should never be the only reason to choose a clinic. With Med World Türkiye, a partner physician first reviews your photos and medical history; you then receive a written, itemised quote from the partner clinic before you book anything.

What your written quote itemises

  • Physician consultation and beard design
  • Procedure and grafts as planned
  • Local anaesthesia and medication
  • Aftercare products and written instructions
  • Hotel accommodation and airport transfers, if requested
  • Interpreter and remote aftercare follow-up

Med World Türkiye does not publish a price list. Every price comes from a written, itemised quote issued by the partner hospital after a surgeon has reviewed your photos, scans or medical records.

Beard Transplant: frequently asked questions

How much does a beard transplant cost in Turkey?

The cost of a beard transplant in Turkey depends on the areas treated, the density you want, the number of grafts your donor area can safely provide, the technique, the level of physician involvement and the partner clinic, plus hotel nights and transfers if you want them arranged. A partner physician first reviews photos of your face and scalp; you then receive a written, itemised quote from the partner clinic before you book anything. Be cautious about package prices offered before anyone has assessed your donor area.

Is a beard transplant in Turkey safe?

A beard transplant in Turkey can be safe when a licensed physician plans the beard and performs or supervises the key steps in a regulated clinic, with sterile technique and careful aftercare. Ask who will design the beard line, extract the grafts and place them. Possible risks include infection, folliculitis and ingrown hairs, swelling, small marks in the beard area, patchy growth, unnatural hair direction and over-harvesting of the donor area. The physician explains these before you consent.

How many days do I need in Istanbul for a beard transplant?

Most people need about 2–3 days in Istanbul for a beard transplant: a consultation and beard design, the procedure itself, which takes several hours under local anaesthesia, and a check-up with the first wash before flying home. Some arrive the evening before to rest after the flight, and combining a beard transplant with a scalp transplant may need an extra day. You leave with medication and written aftercare instructions, and send progress photos for remote follow-up.

Do transplanted beard hairs fall out, and when will I see results?

Yes, most transplanted hairs shed after about 2–4 weeks, which is expected: the follicles stay in the skin and later produce new hair. New growth usually appears after about 3–4 months and fills in gradually, and the final look takes many months, often up to about a year. Hair taken from the back of the scalp tends to keep growing long-term, but results vary with donor quality, and a second session is sometimes needed for more density.

Does a beard transplant hurt, and will it leave scars?

Most discomfort comes from the local anaesthetic injections at the start, after which the face and scalp are numb during the procedure. Afterwards, soreness, tightness and swelling usually last a few days and are controlled with prescribed painkillers. FUE leaves tiny dot-like marks in the donor area that short hair usually hides, and small marks can occur in the beard area, usually covered once the beard grows. A very short haircut or a close shave may show them.

Can I shave after a beard transplant?

You should not shave or trim the beard area until the physician says it is safe, usually once the grafts are secure and the scabs have gone. After that, transplanted hair can be shaved, trimmed and styled like the rest of your beard. Because it comes from the scalp, it may grow longer or feel slightly different from your natural beard hair, so some people trim it more often. Ask the clinic for written shaving instructions before you fly home.

What is the difference between FUE and DHI for a beard?

Both FUE and DHI extract follicles one by one, usually from the back of the scalp; the difference lies in implantation. In classic FUE, the physician first opens tiny channels in the beard area with a fine blade and then places the grafts. With an implanter pen, often called DHI, the channel is created and the graft placed in one step. Either way, careful control of the angle and direction of each hair matters most, and the physician recommends the approach that suits your face.

How do I choose a beard transplant clinic in Istanbul I can trust?

Ask which steps the doctor performs personally, such as designing the beard line and making the recipient incisions, and which steps technicians assist with. Check that the procedure takes place in a licensed medical facility and how many patients the team treats in one day. A careful clinic looks at your donor area before suggesting a graft count, and explains how many grafts can be taken without thinning the back of your head. Through Med World Türkiye, your written plan names the partner doctor, the technique and the estimated graft range.
