Questions to Ask Before You Book Medical Treatment Abroad

The questions to ask a hospital or coordinator before booking treatment abroad: who treats you, what the quote covers, recovery, insurance and follow-up.

Good hospitals and coordinators welcome questions. The answers help you compare options fairly and avoid surprises. Use this list whether you are considering dental work, a hair transplant, cosmetic surgery or another treatment, and wherever you plan to travel from.

Quick answer

Before you book, find out who will treat you and where, what exactly the written quote includes, how long you need to stay, what happens if something does not go to plan, which insurance applies and how follow-up works once you are home. Get the important answers in writing.

About the treatment

  • Is this treatment right for me? Ask the specialist to explain why it suits your case, what the alternatives are, and when they would advise against it.
  • What are the risks? Every treatment has risks. Ask which ones apply to you and how they are managed.
  • What results are realistic? Be cautious of anyone who promises a specific result.

About who treats you

  • Who will carry out the treatment? Ask for the specialist's name and qualifications, and how you can check them.
  • Where will it take place? Ask for the name of the hospital or clinic and whether it holds an international accreditation such as JCI. Check the accreditation on the accrediting body's website.
  • Is the facility authorised to treat international patients? In Türkiye, facilities that treat international patients need authorisation from the Ministry of Health.

About the quote

  • What does the quote include, line by line? For example the procedure, anaesthesia, hospital stay, tests, medicines and follow-up appointments.
  • What is not included? Ask about anything that could be added later, such as extra tests or a longer stay.
  • How long is the quote valid, and what are the payment terms?
  • If hotel nights and transfers are arranged, are they listed separately?

About your stay and recovery

  • How many days do I need to stay? Ask how long before the treatment you should arrive and how long afterwards you should remain.
  • When will I be fit to fly? Your surgeon decides this. Ask what affects the decision.
  • Can a companion stay with me? Ask about the hospital room and the hotel.
  • Will an interpreter be available if I need one?

If something does not go to plan

  • Who do I contact during my stay, day and night?
  • What happens if I need further treatment, during my stay or after I return home?
  • Which insurance applies? Standard travel insurance often excludes planned treatment abroad. Ask what cover applies to complications and how a claim works.

About follow-up

  • How does follow-up work once I am home, and for how long?
  • Will I receive written reports, discharge letters and details of any implants or materials used? Your own doctor will need them.
  • How will my medical information be shared, and with whom? Ask how your data is stored and that it is shared only with your consent.

A good sign

Clear, written answers to these questions are a good sign. If answers are vague, change after you ask again, or come with pressure to decide quickly, take your time and compare other options.

General information, not medical advice. Whether a treatment is right for you can only be decided by a qualified specialist after reviewing your case.
